March 18, 2008. New York, NY—Michelle Paige-Paterson Launches ‘Healthy Steps to Albany’ Contest to Raise Awareness of the Childhood Obesity Epidemic in Harlem.
Partners, sponsors, supporters, celebrity personalities & over 400 kids from Harlem public middle schools kicked off the event at the City College of New York on Tuesday, March 18th.
Healthy Steps to Albany is an initiative that was created by Mrs. Paige-Paterson. It is a contest that will be implemented in eleven middle schools in Harlem. Classrooms compete against each other to see which class can collectively walk the number of steps it takes to walk from New York City to Albany.
The winning classes will also be bused to Hawthorne Valley Farm, an organic/ biodynamic farm in Harlemville, New York, to learn about healthy food production. The New York Mets have invited all of the winners to a game at Shea Stadium.
By making exercise “cool” for kids, “no sweat” for teachers, and inexpensive to carry out, we are aiming to fuse the spirit of imagination with the feeling of power to challenge and inspire our Harlem children to embrace new ways to be healthy.
Assisting Mrs. Paige-Paterson is The National Urban Technology Center, the Metro-Manhattan Chapter of the Links, Inc., Health Corps, CUNY and the New York City Community School Districts Three and Five, who are all partners in this initiative.
